What Is a Handshake Name?

Most people are familiar with domain names like:

example.com

Here, you register example underneath the .com extension.

Handshake works a little differently.

With Handshake, the name itself can exist at the top level of the naming system.

For example:

example/

Instead of registering underneath someone else's extension, you can control the top-level name itself.

What Can You Do With a Handshake Name?

Once you control a Handshake name, you decide how it is used.

You could use it for a website, email, wallet naming, or create names underneath it:

www.example
email.example
me.example

You could keep it for yourself, share names with others, or operate it as your own namespace.

So What Do You Actually Own?

A Handshake name is recorded on the Handshake blockchain and controlled through cryptographic keys.

That ownership also comes with responsibility. You control the keys, and you need to keep track of your name's renewal yourself. There is no registrar sending you a renewal notice.
