# Why Would Anyone Want a Handshake Name?

By now, we’ve looked at what a Handshake name is, how you can get one, and what happens once you own one.

But there’s a more important question:

**Why would anyone want one in the first place?**

For most people, the traditional domain name system works perfectly well. You register a name, pay your renewal fees, and use it for your website or other online services.

Handshake offers something different.

It gives people the option to own and control a name at the root of an alternative, decentralised naming system.

And for some people, that difference matters.

## Ownership

Traditional domain names are registered for a period of time. To keep using the name, you continue renewing it through the traditional domain system.
